A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

이 세상 그 어느 것도 저보다 더 당신의 친절에 감사하지는 못할 겁니다.

그건 특권이 아니라 제겐 더 없는 영광이니까요.
비록 당신이 변변한 집 한 채 갖고 있지 못해도
저는 얼음과 눈을 뚫고서라도 당신을 따르겠어요.
전 따뜻한 실내의 보드라운 베개를 원치 않아요.
당신만이 저의 신이고, 저는 당신의 열렬한 숭배자이기 때문이죠.
제 밥그릇에 신선한 물을 채워 주세요.
그릇에 물이 없어도 원망은 않지만 저는 갈증을 당신께 표현할 수 없거든요.
제게 깨끗한 먹이를 주세요.
그래야만 제가 튼튼히 뛰놀며 당신의 지시를 따를 수 있잖아요?
또 제 몸이 건강해야 당신의 옆을 따라 걸으며
당신이 위험에 처했을 때 목숨을 다해 지켜드릴 수도 있고요.
사랑하는 주인님,
하느님이 제게서 건강과 시력을 거둬 가시더라도 절 멀리 하지 말아주세요.
당신의 부드러운 손길로 저를 어루만져 주시며
영원한 휴식을 위한 자비를 베풀어 주시길 소원합니다.
끝으로,
저는 제 마지막 호흡까지도 느끼면서 당신 곁을 떠날 겁니다.
제 운명은 당신의 두 팔 속에서 가장 안전했었다는 기억과 함께....
