I Love English, 오늘은 ‘Bridal shower’와 관련된 다양한 영어 표현 알아보겠습니다.
We can pull it off
A: Hey! The big day is approaching for the bride-to-be. Let’s all chip in and host a bridal shower for her!
B: Sure, but since her schedule is getting tighter, let’s throw the shower as soon as possible! We can pull it off.
A: I’ll be in charge of invitations and decorating and you take care of the rest.
B: Sounds like a plan! Can’t wait !
A: 결혼식날이 점점 다가오고 있네. 다들 조금씩 돈을 모아서 결혼 축하 파티를 열어주는게 어떻겠니.
B: 그래. 일정이 점점 빡빡해지니까 가능하면 빨리 파티를 열자. 성공적으로 파티를 열어 줄 수 있을거야.
A: 내가 초대장과 장식하는 거 책임질 테니 나머지는 네가 맡아서 해줘.
B: 그게 좋겠다! 너무 기대돼~!
· Something is approaching (= Something is coming up) : ~ (어떠어떠한 날)이 다가오다
Ex) 곧 있으면 발렌타인데이네요!
Valentine’s Day is approaching.
= Valentine’s Day is coming up.
· Bride-to-be : 예비 신부
[참고] 예비 신랑은 ‘Groom-to-be’라고 표현할 수 있지 않을까 생각할 수 있는데요, 이런 표현은 쓰지 않는 다는 것도 알아두세요!
Ex) 이 사람은 제 아내가 될 사람이에요.
This is my wife-to-be. (= This is my fiancée.)
이 쪽은 제 남편 될 사람이에요.
This is my husband-to-be. (= This is my fiancé.)
· Chip in : 여러 사람이 돈을 조금씩 내다
Ex) 제인 결혼 축하 파티를 위해 각자 20불씩 내요.
Let’s chip in twenty dollars for Jane’s bridal shower.
사무실 내 모든 사람들이 제인에게 결혼 선물을 사주기 위해 10불씩 냈다.
Everyone in the office chipped in ten dollars to buy Jane a wedding present.
[참고] 돈을 조금씩 모으자는 뜻의 영어 표현에는 또 ‘pass the hat’이란 표현도 있습니다.
예를 들어 불우 이웃을 돕기 위해 성금을 모읍시다, 영어로는
‘Let’s pass the hat for the needy.’할 수 있죠!
· Throw a party : 파티를 열다
· Pull off : to succeed in doing something difficult, ‘어떠한 어려운 일을 성공적으로 해내다’
Ex) 난 그 팀이 꼭 이길 거라고 믿어.
I believe that team can pull it off.
· Be in charge of something : ~(무엇 무엇을) 책임지다
In charge of 뒤에는 명사가 나오고 동사가 올 경우에는 동사에 ~ing를 붙입니다.
Ex) 저는 인턴 관리를 총 책임하고 있습니다.
in charge of taking care of the interns.
(동사 take 뒤에 ~ing를 붙여 taking이 나왔죠!)
잭이 가장 경험이 많으니 그 부서를 담당해야한다고 생각해요.
I think Jack should be in charge of the department since he has the most experience.
인사를 승인하는 사람은 누군가요?
Who is in charge of approving personnel transfers?
(in charge of 뒤에 동사 approve에 ~ing를 붙인 approving이 나왔죠~)
